A new kitchen run by the ISKCON Annamrita Foundation has begun supplying midday meals to 44,000 students in 500 government and aided schools in Kolkata.
West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari inaugurated the kitchen on August 1. The meals are vegetarian, and eggs will be supplied separately twice a week through self-help groups.
The meal allocation has been increased to 10 rupees per student. The programme is expected to expand within three months to about 250,000 students in nearly 1,800 schools under the Kolkata Municipal Corporation.
The kitchen is part of the city’s effort to make sure children have a dependable meal during the school day while they learn.
