Indonesia began sending 5,538,300 quality reading books to schools on July 31, with the shipment starting in Kudus and traveling to all 38 provinces.
The books are headed to 18,444 primary schools and 6,165 junior secondary schools across 510 districts and municipalities. Schools identified as needing literacy support and schools that had not received earlier book assistance were given priority.
Primary schools will receive illustrated storybooks, while junior secondary schools will receive materials including comics and short novels. Each school will get 100 selected titles, with different numbers of copies for the two school levels.
The ministry says more than 42 million quality reading books have now been distributed through the program. It is also developing digital books, audiobooks, videos, and Braille materials so more children can find a way into reading.
