A United Nations food-production program is helping 13,000 households in Haiti’s Artibonite, Centre, and Ouest departments restore their fields.
The Food and Agriculture Organization is providing more than 205 tonnes of crop and vegetable seeds, along with small livestock, to families facing hunger after violence, economic hardship, supply problems, and climate shocks.
Local communities are helping identify households and decide what support will be most useful. The program is designed to help families grow nutritious food themselves and reduce their reliance on repeated emergency deliveries.
A second phase will bring animals such as ducks, chickens, guinea fowl, rabbits, and goats to more households, adding food and a possible source of income.
