New figures from the World Health Organization show that new hepatitis B infections in the WHO European Region have fallen 54 percent since 2015. New hepatitis C infections are down 28 percent.
Among children under five, estimated hepatitis B prevalence has fallen to 0.06 percent, below the global elimination threshold of 0.1 percent.
Over the past decade, the number of people living with hepatitis C in the region has dropped 29 percent, while deaths linked to it have fallen 33 percent.
WHO says the progress is real, but the job is not finished. About 9.7 million people still live with hepatitis B and 5.6 million with hepatitis C, and many have not yet been diagnosed or treated.
