A former hotel in Boston's Dorchester neighborhood has opened as 99 furnished studio apartments for older adults with very low incomes who have experienced homelessness.
The Community Builders owns and operates the building, while Pine Street Inn provides support services on site. All tenants are over 62, and rent is set at 30 percent of each resident's income.
One resident, identified by the Boston Herald as Reginald, said he had spent two years living on the street before finding an apartment there. He described the home as a place to reconnect with community and begin rebuilding.
The project gives residents a private home and support close at hand in a building adapted from an existing hotel.
