Six young patients at OHSU Doernbecher Children’s Hospital worked with Nike design-team volunteers to create sneakers revealed at the 22nd Doernbecher Freestyle auction in Portland on Oct. 16, the hospital reported.
The auction raised more than $2.4 million, a record for the program. OHSU says the proceeds support care for families in need, pediatric research, and specialized services.
Nearly $1.6 million came from donors, most of it planned for a hospital addition that will bring together the Mother-Baby Unit, fetal surgery program, and a new neonatal intensive care unit.
Each patient-designer worked with Nike staff who volunteered their time. Since the program began in 2004, Doernbecher Freestyle has raised more than $49 million for the hospital.
