California says one million families have now claimed their children's CalKIDS accounts, a state program that provides public savings for higher education and career training.
The program began in 2022. Eligible students can receive up to $1,500 in CalKIDS funds for eligible education expenses, while families can add their own savings as children grow.
The state has established more than six million accounts representing more than $2.3 billion in college and career savings. The one-million mark means those families have taken the step of connecting their children with the funds set aside for them.
The announcement also introduced the California Golden Start Challenge, a partnership with businesses and philanthropic groups intended to encourage more contributions to children's savings accounts.
